French history can be followed thanks to the different types of architecture whose style has evolved at different periods. One of the most popular styles the Gothic architecture is to be appreciated for its finesse, complexity, and elegance. You will notice it by visiting the Cathedral of Rouen, Angers and Notre Dame de Paris with its famous gargoyles.


Although Normandy is rich for its Gothic monuments, the Pope ‘s palace in Avignon, in the South of France is the most important gothic building of the Middle Ages.  It dominates the Rhone river by its imposing architecture. The Romanesque style is mostly seen in Burgundy and reached its peak in the 12th century at Vezelay. In the western part of France, the Loire valley shelters numerous Renaissance-style castles whose first was Amboise castle built under Francis 1st which brought this style from Italy and transformed this medieval fortress into an elegant royal residence.  Despite the strong presence of these styles, French classical architecture is also predominant in the monuments  Europe has got neo-classical monuments in London, Paris with the Pantheon, Versailles and its Trianon palaces left by Queen Marie-Antoinette.
