Reims

Reims is a French commune in the Marne department and the Champagne-Ardenne region, 140 kilometres from Paris.
Inhabited since Neolithic times, this city of Coronations and capital of the Champagne region has two thousand years of history and incomparable architecture. It was here that Clovis was baptised by Saint Rémi, as were numerous other French kings over more than ten centuries.
The Notre-Dame cathedral in Reims is a masterpiece of gothic art and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is celebrating 800 years of history, outdoing many other cathedrals with the richness of the 2,303 works of art which adorn it, including the famous Smiling Angel which is the city’s emblem. In 1974 it was embellished with stained glass windows by Marc Chagall. There are other remarkable things to see too, such as the Saint-Rémi Basilica and the Château de Condé with its sumptuous décor by Watteau.
Champagne is another jewel in the crown of this city. The famous wine was really born in the seventeenth century when its natural effervescence was mastered by the monk Dom Pérignon. The Champagne Houses succeeded in making it the drink of kings, synonymous with celebration and symbol of the French spirit across the world, with many famous brands including Veuve Clicquot-Ponsardin, Roederer and Mumm. It is well worth taking the time to visit the vineyards of the Montagne de Reims, likewise the city of Epernay home to the prestigious cellars of Moët & Chandon which are hollowed out of the chalk.
