Nice
Nice is a city in the south-east of France, in the Alpes-Maritimes department. Four million tourists flock there every year to enjoy the delights of the Côte d’Azur on the Mediterranean coast.
Protected from the wind by a natural amphitheatre of hills, Nice benefits from an ideal microclimate and enjoys an average of 300 days of sunshine per year, making it famous the world over. Nestling between the sea and the mountains, Nice has 10 kilometres of coastline of which 7.5 are beach. It has been a popular resort since the nineteenth century thanks to the British who made “la Baie des Anges” (Bay of the Angels) their favourite place to overwinter and giving their name to one of the most famous streets in the world : The Promenade des Anglais.
Nice also has a rich cultural and artistic heritage due to The National Theatre, the Opera House and its many museums, including one dedicated to painter Henri Matisse, who said “ When I realised that every morning I would see this light again, I just couldn’t believe my luck...”. Down by the port is Le Vieux Nice, the oldest part of the city with its baroque style, its palaces, its streets and colourful façades... not to mention its quaint old shops, the galleries and the extremely lively nightlife.
Then there’s the Nice Carnival, one of the biggest in the world, which takes place every February and lasts for two weeks. Over 1.2 million people attend to see the many events, processions of carnival floats and the famous battle of the 100,000 and more flowers...
