The Moulin Rouge saw the light of day during the Belle Époque, a cabaret in the XVIII district of Paris, along the Clichy boulevard, at the foot of the Butte Montmartre.
The Moulin Rouge first opened its doors in 1889, just as the centenary of the French Revolution was in full swing and Parisians were inaugurating the Eiffel Tower. The Mill, entirely covered in red, served as the establishment’s landmark. Besides its revolutionary fast scene changes, the cabaret’s garden housed an area dedicated to a fun fair and a huge elephant from the Universal Exhibition.
Internationally known for shows and the French Cancan, the Moulin Rouge quickly became the Mecca of Parisian partying. People from all walks of life came to be entertained: revellers, princes, artists, writers and people at large. The painter, Toulouse-Lautrec immortalized the atmosphere through his posters of the star, La Goulue.
Today, the Moulin Rouge remains one of the most famous Paris tourist attractions, and a key place for cabaret shows. 600 000 people come here to see a show each year whilst enjoying a top quality dinner. The show includes 100 artists, 60 dancers, 1 000 glittery costumes, feathers and razzle-dazzle, 800 pairs of shoes, a 40 ton aquarium and 5 pythons.
In the 850 capacity room, 240 000 bottles of champagne are served every year. The Moulin Rouge cabaret is the biggest buyer of champagne in the world.
