This magnificent neighborhood in Paris is known for its village feel and bohemian lifestyle. But it is also home to exquisite restaurants with a very rich history. Discover a few of Montmartre’s iconic restaurants.

La Mère Catherine, the soul of Montmartre

It is one of Montmartre’s oldest restaurants and a real part of the furniture. Opened at the start of the Revolution in 1793, it lived through the transformation of the old village of Montmartre and saw it lose its rustic feel to become a neighborhood of Paris in its own right. Today, it flaunts a chic bistro setting and offers its customers a typical Montmartre ambiance with the regular presence of artists, accompanied on the piano or violin. Passing through Montmartre? You can eat on the terrace, inside or in the gardens of La Mère Catherine.

La bonne Franquette, an artists’ haunt

This Montmartre restaurant has been around for four centuries. It was patronized by the cream of artists in the 19th and 20th century and big names such as Van Gogh, Zola, Toulouse-Lautrec, Renoir and even Monet lunched, debated, and spent unforgettable times there. An authentic Parisian bistro which has managed to preserve its character despite its popularity. La Bonne Franquette is waiting for you on the North side of Butte Montmartre.

Le Moulin de la Galette, immortalized by Renoir

This restaurant was named after the wooden windmill that overlooks it. In the past, Montmartre was exposed to the wind and therefore suitable for windmills. Le Moulin de la Galette welcomed various artists and was immortalized by Renoir in his painting “Bal du Moulin de la Galette”. You could also cross paths with Toulouse-Lautrec, Utrillo or, in the 1980’s, the singer Dalida. You can enjoy its delicious cuisine with seasonal gastronomic specialties.
