Parc Astérix is a theme park in Plailly which is in the Oise department just 30 kilometres north of Paris. The park is dedicated to the world of Asterix and his companion Obelix, the heroes of the Asterix books created in 1959 by French writers Albert Uderzo and René Goscinny. They are the most famous European graphic novels in the world with over 350 million copies sold and translated into 127 languages. Asterix and Obelix live in the year 50 B.C. with their friends in the Village of the Gauls which manages to resist the Roman invasion thanks to a magic potion. Parc Astérix is fun for the entire family, including both the young and not so young. The park has 31 attractions and rides including ten just for young children. There are five different worlds to discover: Gaul, The Roman Empire, Greece, The Vikings and Travel Through Time. A new Egyptian world, inspired by the Caesar and Cleopatra book with a pharaonic attraction: Oziris opened in April 2012. The park has much more to amuse you: there’s The Thunder of Zeus, one of the biggest roller coaster rides in Europe – a whole kilometre long and with a speed of 90 kilomtres per hour. In Gaul you can visit a partial reproduction of the village of Asterix and Obelix. On The Streets of Paris you’ll be transported back to the Middle Ages with knights and craftsmen. The park also has several live performances and shows. Examples are the Delphinarium with its aquatic ballets performed by dolphins and sea-lions, and The Robbery of the Century performed by eight actors and stuntmen.
