Just 16km from Paris, towards the south-east, this palace is where the kings of France lived, from Louis XIV to Louis XVI. It is one of the world's best known palaces and one of the biggest in Europe, and has also been declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. A symbol of royal absolutism and the incarnation of classic French art, the palace built by Louis XIV (le Roi Soleil) is on a mind-blowing scale: 2,300 pieces of furniture covering 63,000m²! This includes the hall of mirrors, an emblematic room containing 357 mirrors, and its park which covers 700 hectares. But the estate is also home to other marvels: The French Gardens of the Palace of Versailes, developed by André Le Nôtre, its great monumental channel or its 2000 ornamental lakes and fountains, in the style of the famous 'Bassin d'Apollon', whose water feed represented a major technical challenge at the time of its creation. The estate, which is also home to some anomalies like the Petit Trianon and the Grand Trianon, ranks as one of the most visited places in France.
