'La Douce France' or 'Sweet France', as once sung by local Charles Trenet, is a country of 65 million inhabitants spread across a greatly varying landscape. Situated in western Europe, metropolitan France has a warm climate and an incomparable cultural heritage. Its world famous towns are packed with history and their museums and monuments collect treasures as the centuries go on. Thirty-five of its historical sites have now been classed as World Heritage Sites by Unesco.

France's capital, Paris, the city of lights, and the region of Île-de-France, contain two hundred museums, several of which are amongst the world's most prestigious. For example, the Louvre and its Mona Lisa, the biggest and most visited museum in the world; and the Orsay Museum with its fabulous collection of impressionist art. The town is also loaded with exceptional monuments, such as the Notre Dame de Paris cathedral, the Eiffel Tower and the Sacré-Cœur of Montmartre.
