You have a desire to discover the World? Come visit the Musée Quai Branly-Jacques Chirac in Paris where you can delve into the art of civilizations from 10,000 years ago to the 20th century, from Asia, Oceania, the Americas, Africa and the Near East.
Located near the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Musée Quai Branly was dedicated on June 20, 2006. Ten years later, it took on the name of President Jacques Chirac, who launched the project. It was constructed by the celebrated architect Jean Novel, who gave it a very original appearance: a building mounted on pilings, forming a bridge between the various civilizations. Its exterior appearance mixes glass and plants, giving it a very unusual character. In its permanent collection, the Musée Branly presents almost 3,500 works of art from 200 years of history, divided by geographic areas.
The Oceania collection (Polynesia and Australia) and the archipelagos of Asia and the South East (Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines) are oriented towards the themes of culture and society. You will discover objects that show man in the search of glory, the importance of death in their traditions, the changes in bodies and their tastes for modernity.
The exhibition of the African works is oriented around the various regions of this continent. You will notice the rich African archeology, the arts of Mali, the masks of Western Africa when you view the films or read the texts and documents on this collection and civilization at every stage.
One of the areas dedicated to North Africa and the Near East focuses on clothing art, with the evolution of the face veil and traditional costumes. You can admire a camel sedan chair from the steppes of Syria, superb ceramics and magnificent jewelry. You will discover the art of the theater of shadows, that of the rural rugs of Morocco and even the art of the Tuareg.
Then go to the conquest of the Americas, across Hispanic America, the Americas of the 17th century up to current times and Afro-American culture.
The rooms devoted to Asia primarily present the popular art of the 19th century to present. You can admire the costumes and adornments of Japan or India, the jewelry of China, and religious illustrations from the region.
You can visit the Musée Quai Branly as a family by bringing your children to the many workshops that are offered by the museum.
